Protective Glazing Systems

Southwest Ohio Art Glass offers protective glazing systems which can be highly beneficial to extending the life of stained glass windows. Protective glazing or storm glass, is one of the best ways to protect stained leaded glass windows from the risk of breakage due to vandalism or severe weather conditions. However, if not installed properly, an adverse effect could possibly occur which could accelerate the rate of deterioration.

Common Mistake When Installing

The most common mistake while installing a protective glazing system is the absence of ventilation. Moreover, heat generated between the layers of protective glass and stained glass can reach extreme levels. Therefore, It is recommended there be adequate ventilation located at the top and bottom of the system to encourage air movement between the layers. These vents should be fitted with screens to prevent insect infiltration.

Which is better for glazing, glass or plastic?

Glazing systems have traditionally been made from panes of glass but plastic sheets are a competitive, if not better, solution. Furthermore, due to their lower-cost installation, greatly enhanced safety properties and ability to keep all the great benefits of glass.
